Still life with bottle and apricots

20 x 18.5 cm oil on Canson oil sketch paper

The little stoneware bottle is one of my treasured finds at the antique market at Isle sur la Sorgue in Provence. The apricots are Italian.

I've been inspired to give oils another chance after the delight of watching Sarah Wimperis painting with them in Bedoin. Before I left, I crept into Julian Merrow-Smith's studio in the hope that I might find a mote of brilliance floating in the shifting light. It would appear that I now need to apply myself for twenty years or so.

Very nice! I've been curious about using oil paint on paper. How do you like it compared to canvas?

Robyn - Not 20 years! Great start given you haven't used oils for ages! Lovely blue in the bottle, i can see why you snapped it up :o)

Hope we see it in watercolour too!

Glad you posted this - a lovely little study of your "buy". You've actually no problem with oils at all.

Keep at it Robyn, it's all about practice. Nice start, do more!

Katherine, I had trouble covering the paper in the background. I've managed to gesso a piece of board for my next effort, I'm hoping I'll enjoy that more. Real canvas I do like but this was really just an exercise to get back into oils.

Alison, I suspect you'll be sick of these bottles by the time I've finished with them. ;)

Bridget - Thank you. I took your advice on photographing on the ground rather than the easel. Thanks.

Sarah - One week, one painting - I'd better get a move on! Lovely to see you back in the soft light of Cornwell - must seem like another planet after the brilliance of the Provence light.

Glad to see that Sarah's example has got you painting in oils again. Looks like a very creditable start to me.

Now for the next one - two bottles! ;)

I re-read your post. I thought you said that you hadn't used oils in 20 years. I couldn't delete my comment after writing it. This is a lovely use of color. I can't wait to see what you do after 20 more years!

Thank you all, I certainly can't say I stopped through lack of encouragement. ;)

Martin = Just saw your wonderful still life of market finds. Bravo!
