Passion Flower in Watercolour

Passion Flower - Watercolour on Arches HP paper

The passion flowers are blooming in the garden and because they have such a beautifully engineered structure I decided to sketch one. I then decided to try one in watercolour. It was a battle and I think the passion flower won.

I've been so intrigued watching the way the blooms open and close. They don't seem to just wither and die like a lot of flowers but close up like an umbrella in reverse and then bring their outside leaves back over into their original bud form. Amazing.

Graphite sketch

Coloured pencils might be a better medium to capture the delicate geometric form. It could become a long-term passion trying to capture the perfection of these flowers.

Absolutely GORGEOUS!! And truly, you'd never have an inkling that you had any trouble with the watercolor! Do you make a lemonade type drink from the ripened fruit -- I used to make jam! MISS you (and Italy!!!) LOL

Bravo! I've always "bottled" when faced with a flower like this as it just seems so complicated - and yet that is what intrigues!

Both of these look lovely!!! When I read your description of how they close up I got thought of a lover wrapping their arms around their love and enclosing them in their arms. I guess the passion flower is called that for a reason.

I stopped by to see your blog because of the Sketchercise that we belong to now. Your work is lovely. Your use of line and design is terrific.

Thank you all for being so generous. I was really very disappointed with the watercolour but I'm now encouraged to have another go. Nothing like painting the same thing a couple of times. :)

Lin - is that lemonade recipe going to find its way to me? Please. :) To date I've found the fruit very disappointing. Not at all like the delicious passionfruit we get in Australia.
