Sketching and Snowing

Pitt Artist Pen & Pelikan ink wash

When we first arrived in in Tuscany I was distressed at the sight of a crippled old tom cat dragging himself past our house. I thought he'd probably been hit by a car until I saw him one morning, high on a rooftop, hunting!

This is a bit heavy handed as a sketch, but I think it would make a nice woodcut if only I could make a woodcut!

I've been suffering from Snow Envy for a couple of days after seeing Casey Klahn's photos of his new studio sitting in a beautiful snowscape. My inner child was delighted to wake this morning to a small helping of our own snow.

It doesn't seem that long since our favourite neighbour was sunning himself on one of those lounges. It's blowing a gale now and we are expecting more of the white stuff in the morning.

GREAT JOB, Robyn! I love the way you've achieved such terrific light on the left side of the bricks!

I like your rooftop sketch a lot. Nothing wrong with being heavy handed once in a while! Actually, one of the things I like about it is the weightiness of the structure in contrast to the grace and delicacy of the cat and bird.

It's snowy here in Maine, USA, too... no doubt about a white Christmas this year!

That's a delight. If only it had all stayed on your side of the mountain. I've much more here, but I'm not painting it.

You'ec still got blue skies!

Whereas we are back to GREY DAYS and it was very nearly dark by 4pm this afternoon.

I think this is a lovely idea and that this maybe benefit from reworking. It feels like this is the first go and you are going to go on and refine it.......

Maybe a line drawing while you're practising for your wood cut adventures?

Great job on this, Robyn. I can almost hear the bells ringing...but then I guess the cat wouldn't still be sitting there unless he was deaf. Great snow pictures. Last year we got a Christmas card (e-mailed) of the agriturism that we stayed at in Tuscany, with snow on the ground. It was so strange to see it that way. That's what your photos reminded me of. Thanks. Ciao!

Wow, that's one fabulous sketch!! I would love to make woodcut prints, but I only know how to make etchings (which I don't enjoy.) Wouldn't it be fun to try and make some linocuts together??
And thank you for the lovely snow pictures. That's as close as I'm going to get to snow for the foreseeable future.

I love the way the light hits the sides of the building! Nicely done.
Enjoy the snow... it looks beautiful there.

Your snow looks much like ours on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee, US. Much less than I saw the 24 years I lived in Buffalo, NY, but much dearer and better-loved! Lovely photo!
