The Whole Picture

Peach & Pot 10" x 10" oil on canvas

I'm calling this one finished. An artist friend asked if I enjoyed making this painting. I couldn't answer the question. I know I enjoyed the peach - both in painting and eating! I enjoyed painting the pattern on the blue pot. Still very intimidated by oils though. I plan to put them away for a while now.

The same friend suggested I should now make a choice of medium and commit to it. But which one?

This is the whole painting that your were struggling with? It came out great. I love the red at the top and repeated in the peaches. It's hard to pick one medium when you enjoy doing more than one.

I'm really impressed by this painting! Can't imagine that you'll give up oil paints for good - your work is so lovely.

What a beautiful painting! Robyn, you really did wonders with a medium you're still learning to appreciate. I love the way you used the colour red in the peach and in the flowers to balance the white areas. The blue pattern in the teapot is incredible!

I love looking at your work Robyn, you have a lovely way of including serenity in your art.

Many of the best artists I know use many media. Many of the best artists in history used many media. How can you ever do mixed media (unless you cook and paint at the same time) if you give them up?

I like this. I think it has brilliancy and texture that are difficult or sometimes impossible to do in other media.

So how about sculpture in the garden shed?

I have to say I disagree with your friend. I think your medium should be dictated by whatever feels right in the moment of creation. Mix them up - use them all - one at a time or all at once - try something new - fall back on an old favorite.... While I recognize that sometimes it's helpful to set boundaries for our works - it helps to keep us focused - I don't believe we should set limits. Besides, I'd be willing to bet that (to use a similar example) as soon as you 'resolve to give up chocolate' all you will think about is 'chocolate'.

Oh Robyn, this is beautiful - I love the contrast between the juicy peaces and flowers and the very restrained blue pot. I say, work with whatever medium you feel like at the moment.

Why in the world would you chose only one joy in life? Variety is the spice of life, right? Do whatever you want to do!!! This is beautiful!
Always, Rita

I agree wth everyone else. How boring to be limit yourself to only one medium........unless it is what makes you incredibly happy, that is.

I think you made the painting as delicious as I'm sure that glorious peach tasted. I love how you used that red. Wow. And the delicate design on the tea pot is a fabulous contrast to the rich red.

NEVER commit to anything...it can get you in trouble! LOL. Oh I think you should be guided by the whims of the day and use whatever suits you for the time and moment. I personally love your watercolors but perhaps it's because it is my favorite medium. I think you amazing and brave for challenging yourself to try different mediums. All your examples of each are rendered beautifully! So, go forth and create!

Robyn - I love the peach! Just perfect! Don't put the oils away - the only way to overcome your fear is to use them! Remember familiarity breeds contempt and soon you will wonder what on earth intimidated you!

I'll never fail through lack of support with such kind friends and so much wonderful encouragement. Thank you all!

This is a lovely painting Robyn. Ilove the delicacy of the blue pot set against the impact of the red flower and the juicy peach.

Commit to making art and then use which ever medium seems appropriate for what you want to do

I can't imagine anybody ever asked Picasso to commit to one medium! ;)
