Rice Paddy Watercolour

Watercolour 25 x 35cms

I've just bought myself a Winsor & Newton Tyne metal easel which is letting me stand to paint and hopefully get a bit of free shoulder movement into my work. I found inspiration for this watercolour in the travel section of an Australian newspaper. Unfortunately I can't find a credit for the photographer but hopefully they will understand this is just a 'student' exercise.

It's been a while since I managed to quickly paint something for the sheer pleasure of it.

Somehow I thought this wasn't a local scene!!=)

I do enjoy your watercolour style - it's pretty much what I would like to do. Apart from the Wet Canvas forum, which you mentioned to me before, did you use any specific books, DVDs etc in your early painting days?

All the best from Taiwan (where we see sights like your painting),

Wonderful painting - the way you painted the hats is terrific and my eyes keep returning to them.

What a free feeling of delightful colour palette and I can see what attracted you to the photo in the first place.

As for your lovely sunflower posts, how can you say you think the water colour painting is lifeless. It has great tonal contrasts, hangs it head just as in real life and I love the touch of warm red underneath.

Di - Thank you. I think the fact that I'm missing Asian food so much attracted me to this reference. It's a beautiful composition. I wish I'd taken the photo.

Elizabeth - you wouldn't have any trouble finding fabulous Asian food! :) Many thanks for your kind comment.

As for good watercolour books and DVDs: It's not really reflected in the style of this latest watercolour but I highly recommend a DVD called Splashing Paint by Australian artist John Lovett. He always inspires me. Also investing in a beautiful big fat No8 Winsor & Newton Series 7 sable brush will give your painting paintings an extraordinary boost. Well worth the investment. Let me know how you get on.

Shirley - Thanks. I found the hats irresistible :)

Joan - You are very kind about the sunflower but I'm not convinced. Glad you like the paddy field though. I wish I could find another reference that appeals as much. Better look in my own photos this time.

Katherine. Thanks again :)

This is really nice!!! I love the shadow and the darks and lights. Love the sunflowers below...maybe I can paint them when I visit you.

Joan - Ours are going to be over and I fear the birds will depart too but, hopefully I'll still be able to find a field of sunflowers for you :) At the moment it feels way to hot to sit outside to paint them.

What a great image, Robyn! I love this watercolor. Wonderful movement and I love the notion of the easel that allows good all-arm movement! It's beautiful.

She shoots... she SCORES! Even the dinky thumbnail that comes up in my blog reader preview made me go "OOOOOOOOOOOOH. Robyn did good!" Especially love the color in the hats.

I would think the photographer would be honored if he saw this 'student exercise.' I first though, wow, she's traveling!! Lovely Robyn.

Wow. I hope everyone has clicked to see the large image. There's such lovely, nuanced, watery light here, Robyn. And the composition is stunning.
Gorgeous work.
I have been absent from cyberspace for a while. I love coming here to see what you've been up to.

This is beautiful! I spent ages this morning cruising around your blog. Too many favourites to name them all. I love your sketching and Italy too, so I am really smitten all the more. I would love to be able to sketch like you. You must be in heaven living in a painting (Italy) :)

Cheers
