Nesting Pigeon Watercolour Sketch

Watercolour & Gouache pen sketch on grey paper

There are pigeons nesting opposite our living room window. It's causing me a great deal of anxiety because the foolish couple built their nest on top of lethal spikes placed on the window sill to discourage such nesting and resting. Now there is at least one squab in the nest, I saw a tiny head for a fraction of a second, and I'm terribly worried about how the babies are going to get across the spikes to learn to fly.

I know many of you don't like pigeons but as I've said before I have a soft spot for them, probably because they are the only birds that will sit still long enough for me to sketch them. Nobody around here wants to give them a home unless it's to fatten them to eat.

Not much of a photo but the best I can do without a bigger lens.

Robyn, your sketch is sweet. I like pigeons, too. They are so peaceful and the sounds they make are very soothing. I also like their soft colors.

Lovely sketch Robyn! I love the way you handled the background too, with just a hint of detail. This little family is so considerate, posing for you right outside the window!

Thanks Felicity. I think the architect who has an office below thinks I'm stalking him because I seem to be peering into his window all day! I doubt he knows about the pigeons. He must break out in a cold sweat when he sees me with the camera!

Thank you, Candy. :)

Lovely colours Robyn! I ditto Felicity on the background detail. It frames it really nicely.

Yumm, pigeon pie, :o)

You've "nailed" this one, Robyn. Composition and colour are just right.
Title? "Fakir" perhaps.

Oh, this is wonderful! I love the hinted chicken wire there--that's done with great effect here, Robyn.

What was she thinking -- starting a family scrunched in behind that vicious (but nicely rendered) wire!

ouch! poor little squab

lovely sketch though

We've got a pair of these who visit and they've raised some young ones this year high up in some ivy on the house next door.

We have lots of pigeons around our village - often circling round the church tower and their plaintiff call goes on all day!! Sometimes in early May often mistake it for the first call of the cuckoo in the distance. Considerate of mum to sit so still for you - lovely piece of work - such soft colours.

What lovely subtle colours! Proper pigeon like.

Di - Thank you:) The kid will probably grow up singing 'I was born... on a bed of nails.'

Sue - Many thanks.

Charlene - I bet the male chose the 'house'.

Vivien - Thank you too. In the ivy sounds like a sensible place to raise a family.

Joan - You are very kind. We have a whole colony that live in the bell tower of one of the churches. It's the collared doves I used to mistake for cuckoos.

Katherine - Thank you.:) There's a couple of pen lines breaking up the colour transitions I'd like to get rid of but that's the nature of pen, I'm afraid, it's there for good.

I like the colors and feel of this!! Poor pigeons! Couldn't they find a better spot to call home?
