Montecchio Vesponi Castle watercolour

Watercolour 20cm x 20cm

This is my second attempt at this view of Montecchio as seen from the garden of a beautiful agriturismo in the Val de Chio. Doesn't seemt to matter how I approach it, it still looks like a greeting card. Oh well, I guess that is the price one pays for living in Postcard Land.

Postcard Land it may be, but what a way to suffer for your craft! Lovely piece once again... I particularly like the contrast of the delicately handled vines with the solid-feeling wall.

Sherrie - Thank you. The composition really doesn't do anything for me and I can't believe I didn't fix that in two efforts.

Vivien - thank you. I'd love to show it to you one day.

tHIS soooo returns me to a country I love --- OUTSTANDING Robyn .. that wall, flowers, view -- you have me pining for Italy -- again. Hope you are well!

Yes, the price one pays... I especially like what looks like reflected light bouncing up to glow in the shadow in this perfect little scene.

I can see how finding a composition here could be difficult... so MANY intriguing parts, it's hugely tempting to try to fit it all in one go. It's part of why I've been quite content to look at my feet for inspiration lately. ;-)

Well, I think it's lovely, Robyn! I love the colour of the pot and the shading of the wall and I think it has depth. It draws the eye around and it's framed beautifully. Of course you could always come to Geneva and draw some Grime Green and Grubby Grey apartment blocks! ;)

Lin - Thank you and how lovely to see you :)

Charlene - Thank you. We went there to paint at Magic Hour.

Sherrie - I always try to put too much in. Same when I'm mixing a cocktail :)

Felicity - Thank you. I always appreciate your comments. So there is no truth in the advertising that you have a lake there in Geneva ;)

It's beautiful! I love the way we're peeking through the framed view. Charming, Robyn. You're living in such a stunning place; I always look forward to the images you come up with us--makes me nostalgic for Italy.

I love it for it's delicacy.

My thoughts on the composition (I hope you don't mind)... Although the tree on the right adds balance, if it was omitted it would seem less a-stylised-idea of beauty. Also, the tower would be better off-centre. However, when you are dealing with such a fabulous picture-perfect view I think you will struggle to avoid postcard imagery.

... and whats wrong with looking like a postcard - it reflects your wonderful countryside, its sunshine and its colour - everything a visitor wants as a reminder or to make people back home feel jealous!! Postcards start off as pieces of artwork selected by very discerning greetings card publishers. .. and I'd choose this one from a shop full of cards any day.

It's beautiful. My wife is a direct descendant of John Hawkwood, who once lived in the castle. We plan on visiting it one day.

Thanks, Jaimie. Sir John Hawkwood was a fascinating character. I never see the castle without thinking of him and I see the castle most days. Let me know if you visit.
