Kaki Pen Sketch and Gouache

Lami Safari Pen and Gouache

What I most love about winter in Tuscany - and I'm keeping count on one hand - is all the Kaki (Persimmon) trees dangling their golden fruit like Christmas trees.

I picked up a couple of fallen fruit on my walk the other morning and by the time I'd sketched them we were off to buy our own Kaki tree.

Oh how wonderful! I had no idea they grew in winter or that you could have your very own tree!

Just make sure Dermot stays away!

I'll be looking forward to seeing more paintings...........

The plant I call persimmon is a small shrub with summer bell like flowers in different colours... well thats what I call the two plants I have in the garden.... but I simply love your story of how you purchased and drew this lovely red berry tree also called persimmon!!

See you had 20 comments on your flying pages post - and well deserved - it was wonderful to turn the pages and enjoy every sketch.

Katherine - thank you. I always think the little piece of branch that remains attached to the persimmon looks like a calligraphic stroke - maybe that's why the fruit has been cultivated since ancient times in China and Japan.

Dominique - Many thanks and I'll look forward to you making a book of your art :)

Joan - These persimmons are the size of tomatoes and the trees, when mature take on very graceful shapes.

That is a beautiful thing.

Beautiful sketch!
Our persimmons are lying squashed under the huge tree. They matured in late September in Positano.

That's beautiful, Robyn. A student brought me a branch yesterday with 3 persimmons on it. I didn't even know they grew in Las Vegas.

TeeGee - Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving.

Scintilla - Many thanks. I'm so envious of your garden lemons. We have three tiny green and one half ripe lemons on the potted tree on our terrace - that's the total crop.

Candy - Glad you like it. They seem to grow all over the place. Next year I may have enough to make a small pot of jelly.

How lovely. The shape is quite Chinese. Is that the origin of the tree I wonder?

And lucky you to have them at your fingertips - literally. To both eat and paint. I buy them here occasionally and they're delicious.

I've never seen a persimmon tree before. I like your sketch and the vibrant color of the fruit itself.
