Experimenting with Gouache

I've recently been looking at some beautiful paintings in gouache and was inspired to give it a go. None of these little experiments achieve what I set out to do but it is an interesting exercise to paint the same subject over and over again. This is the medieval tower behind the wall at the top of our garden.

I'm not ready to give up yet!

Aren't you the clever one, doing all these color versions. I like the darker orange and blue one and the magenta one and.....

Have you ever seen the work of Joseph Crawhall? He worked in watercolor and gouache on unprimed linen. OMG. Sadly, I can't find much work online, but here's a little sample at Wikipedia:

Sherrie - Talk about coincidence. I'm just working on another duck picture and here you are sending me a link to Joseph Crawhall's wonderful White Drake. I had totally forgotten that painting but I remember how much I loved it when Katherine Tyrrell posted a link to it.

I'm going to have to hunt down some more of his work. He certainly knows his gouache :)

Robyn, I love the gray and red one the best. Even if you weren't all that happy with these (which many of us would disagree with), I'm sure that you learned alot!

I really do think the gray and red one is very emotive...

Very interesting - it's a lot of fun to scroll down through the different versions. You've got some very beautiful, intense colors there. Now I want to go shopping for gouache!

I love seeing the different color combinations and the different feelings they give. This is a great idea!!

What a wonderful idea to put so many versions on one sheet! I think I'll try that!

These little studies look great Robyn- nice play on the colour combinations. I'm taking along my gouache to Coin Perdu - I'm still very stupid with them and seeing your studies here makes me excited about working with them! this is great , thanks!

Rose - Thank you. That grey one was probably closest to what I was trying to achieve. I still have a long way to travel with colour.

Casey - I think you'd do splendid things with gouache. Go get 'em!

Joan - Thanks but I wish you could see the original paintings that inspired me. They were also variations of the same subject. Beautiful.

Raena - Enjoy. Putting them all on one sheet was my idea. Trouble is I mucked up the margins so I should really start again. Your EDM sketches are impressive.

Ronell - This exercise was all about the different palettes. Soooooo hard. I recalled you having gouache, so I'm glad I've given you another challenge to take on holiday. Have fun :)

they are all lovely even if they didn't achieve what you wanted. The grey and red one reminds me a lot of a faded photo

H, H & B - thank you :)

Jil - I should have been painting it in different seasons. It's since the weather has changed that I'm even more aware of how the colour changes from hour to hour - not to the extent of the qouache, of course, but quite a lot. At night both the wall and the tower are floodlit and that's another mood. Is the weather beautiful in Venice too?

Robyn, the weather is glorious..I even weeded my little garden...now I need to think of a few flowers to plant for my last summer here...I like your sketches too and the view you see is awesome...Jil
