Exploring Oil Paints

Gloves & Oranges 18 x 23 cms
Oil on Canson Primed Paper for oil

I'm way off track with my 2008 Art Goal no.7 to sketch something every day. I've been mucking around with oil paint again, determined to pursue Art Goal no.8 to be more risky and playful. Since I don't seem to have the nerve to be more risky and playful on a proper canvas, I've cut up some Canson paper primed for oil.

My friend Taya has a passion for Italian kid gloves, so while she and Peter were packing to return to Australia I swiped her new gloves and paired them with three oranges as an exercise in complementary colours. Nothing subtle about this one!

My tiny studio isn't a healthy place to work with oils and I think that's been one of the reasons I've not really got into this medium. Now I've set up a corner at the back of the apartment I have the benefit of what natural light there is at this time of year, plus some air circulation.

Oh my gosh Robyn!! I LOVE this one!! So vibrant, and the composition is perfect.... this is a great direction (and definitely fits your goal). Hope we see more...

Wow - now that's what I call colourful!

And I'm loving the mini Studio as well. You could maybe do some still lifes with backlighting effects!

What a lovely, colorful painting!! It looks like an advertisement. I like your setup by the window. The light looks good.

what a fun painting! I too love Italian gloves and now own 3 pairs; black, red and white. They look just like those except not as colorful! I am getting such an itch to try oils!

Yeah yeah, 'fess up! Your "corner at the back of the apartment" is the bedroom.

My bedroom! Where this boofhead has to sleep at night!

I counted my brain cells this morning. What comes after three?

See what your oil paint fumes are doing to my boofy brain?

Fabulous! I love vibrant colour. I used to have kid gloves when I lived in Italy. I was only wondering recently what could have happened to them.

Wonderful! Another artist just posted about color and complementary colors. Great painting. Do you have a small fan to pull the air out? That makes better circulation.

(( circle of painting hugs )))

Many thanks for all your positive and supportive responses to what is a bit of a full-on assault of colour. It was really meant to be playful (TY Ronell :) )

I've been trying to resist going back to it and knocking off some of the rough aspects. I know the values are not good, way too many in the same range. But I am trying to free myself up just to make sketches sometimes and move on.

So now I'm taking aspects of both these images into a watercolour.

Marta - Have you got those oils yet?

I tried to leave a comment yesterday but blogger was having a temporary meltdown, so I couldn't. I do like the vibrant colors and the strong paint handling in this one!And your painting spot is so charming. Tell your housemates to pipe down and let you work;D.

That is one bold and playful painting! I swing from oils to watercolours and back again, with the odd bit of boot polish thrown in - my studio is completely chaotic right now. I envy your neat spot by the window - especially when it's in Tuscany - paint me bright green!

A beautiful spot to create such a colorful piece. I can feel the softness of the gloves.

Isn't it great to explore new mediums? I, too, am on a journey with oils this year.

That 'corner' looks so peaceful, despite Dermott's protestations. :)

FABULOUS, Robyn! Those gloves are absolutely stroke-able -- the leather texture so evident!!! FANTASTIC!!!!

My first time visiting your blog. Your art is really beautiful. And I love your dogs! I can only imagine the inspiration you get in Tuscany. We stayed near Lucca a few years ago and hope to return.
I'll also be returning here to see your lovely art work.
