Finally ... Light!

I've been waiting since November for a proper light in my studio. Since I don't have a window in my 'cupboard', much of the time I haven't been quite sure what I'm painting. It's finally arrived and after a naked 60 watt bulb I'm dazzled. I'm also grateful to our wonderful electrician/friend Carlo who found it and eventually installed it. And, of course, to HWEM, who encouraged me to spend the money to get it.

Before I was driven home by spots of rain smudging the ink in my Moleskine this morning, I managed this quick sketch of the gate we pass through twice a day taking the dogs for walks up to the tower.

HWEM here. I'm only too happy to encourage you to spend your money. The light blasting from your studio doorway reminds me of "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind", but I can live with that. Just don't go building any mountains of mud in the studio.

Oh, and now that you have light, can you see your way clear to fixing your typos?

Fixed! And when did you say you'd be getting your kitchen lights?

Does this mean that your work is going to get even better?! Nice drawing of the gateway; getting the perspective right on such a narrow path would have been tricky for me!

I agree with Dave - that perspective looks difficult. You've done a great job, and it looks like you live in a beautiful place. Congratulations on your studio light.

That was funny..."Close encounters of the third kind"...I now have a visual of your studio in my mind!
I love your gateway, beautiful colors on the walls and the touch of red pots and plants give it a romantic feel, which of course is how it should be living where you live!

I am a regular to your blog and thought I would pop in and say hello.
The studio light is fantastic and actually did think at first glance that it was a skylight. Gee your area is tidy. I truly need to sort my own studio as I am getting buried under a mountain of stuff. mmmmm...maybe I should stop buying stuff from eBay...LOL

You have done a wonderful job on the perspective of your drawing. I see so many with buildings leaning back as if they are going to topple over. Gosh that archway if good!

I just love your IKEA desk and now with light from above, we expect even more lovely art from you! I have too much light in my stuio and find myself covering up the window often. Just bought some chalkboard cloth that I might use to make a window shade with benefits!!!

Dave - I do hope so! Thank you :) The perspective wasn't really hard because there were good negative spaces to judge by. I find I do a lot more sight measuring of angles these days and that seems to work. It's amazing how much of it all is just learning the tricks of the trade.

Casey - Many thanks. See above for perspective lecture LOL.

Lin - Thank you! I wish it were a skylight. Couldn't have one because of the attic above. We lose the light too early in the winter as well.

Ronell - Rather than 'close encounters' I prefer to think of the halo of light bursting from my studio as creative energy LOL. Thanks for your lovely comment.

Susan - Hi and TY. It's such a small space I have to be tidy. Kind words about my arch but I fear I made a mess of the RH side and I've got two totally different textures happening. I have learnt a bit from this one.

Marta - Does that mean you will be painting on your blind? Nice idea.

I love that picture. It's beautiful. Glad I found your blog and look forward to more posts.

Texas espresso - Delighted you dropped in! How lovely that you too are coming to live in Italy. Great blog you have.

Congrats on the studio light! I'd take the studio even without the light. I use my kitchen table, which despite my complaining works well because it's really big enough to spread out.

The gate sketch is great! I love the little cobblestone marks in the path and the trees just past the arch of the gate. I really enjoy seeing all the different things you've been trying.

Having an inkling of the cost of electricity in Italy I can only imagine that this installation is really a sign of true love!

This bit's for HWEM (if you don't feel I'm being over-familiar): Good on yer mate! ;)

What a cozy studio! And so tidy---you'd be shocked and horrified if you saw mine. I love the way you've placed your color charts underneath the glass desktop, for easy reference. Way to go, Robyn!

Joan - Many thanks - this was a bit of an experiment to see how little detail I could get away with.

Katherine - It's impossible to be too familiar with HWEM;) By the way he wanted to make it clear that I am paying for my own light and electricity. He doesn't want anyone to think he's getting soft.

Laura - I wish I knew who you are. How about a photo of your studio?

What a charming little sketch. It looks like you live in a beautiful area. Your studio/cupboard looks beautifully designed and very comfortable. Your desk really intrigued me. What a cool idea to have glass atop an area to put things.
