Oil on Foil - Golden Apples

Oil on Metallic Foil on Canvas - 10" x 10"

This one was an experiment and as such turned out rather better than I expected. It is almost impossible to photograph. Now it's gone to live with some Favourite People in Sydney.

I only achieved 24 posts on this blog last year. The shame of it all. Better than Dermott achieved on his blog though.

So what's in store for 2011? - I think I'll just take the trip and not make any plans and see where I wash up.

The matte red against the reflective gold is lovely. I quite like it. And yes, I can imagine the difficulties in photographing it.

What kind of foil did you use, does it have a brand name? I'm wondering how this would work for a fish painting.

I'm sure your journey in 2011 will find you in many interesting and inspiring places.

As the old saying has it, "Those who can, don't; those who can't, do.".

Thanks Jeanette. You don't actually see those horrible red halos around the apples on the painting itself.

I used Rayher Hobbykunst Deko Metal. Shame I started this series with real gold at the top of the market because I would like to move on to genuine gold leaf. I have a few little sheets from years ago but expect I will be inhibited if I attempt to paint on it.

I'm planning more of these - 'fish' is on my list too. I thought they would look great on silver foil. Go for it, I'm going to continue with fruit, birds and flowers for a bit first.

Dermott - If you don't watch yourself, I'm going to hid your non-slip socks!

Actually I'm going to HIDE your non-slip socks.

This is really a super painting, Robyn! Like every one of your (tiny little number of) posts, it has something very special to say. And I like your pragmatic approach to the delights (I'm pretty sure) you will produce in 2011. Hope there will be lots of gold -- you've inspired me to give it a try too!

Charlene - Thank you :) Earlier I was looking at your blog and tried to leave a comment, forgetting you had turned them off. I wanted to say that I think with those recent beautiful abstracts of your watercolours you should hook up with a Glass Artist (unless you want to take up lead lighting yourself) - I see them as huge, beautiful stained glass windows - or what about traditional woven tapestry. The sky's the limit you know ;)

Ah, yes, but what good posts they were, Robyn.
I(and many others, 'Im sure) have been interested in your white line work, your sketchersizes...oh, all of it, really.
Now, off you go in your floaty boat and I'll look forward to whatever you have to share.
Happy creative New Year, my friend.

The apples look so lush on the gold.

Wow. Wow. Wow. This is so RICH! I want to pick up the apples and CHOMP them! Well done. What's that they say about quality and not quantity? You done did that, girl!

Funny, I actually picked up a little "starter" metal foil kit to play with... I have it in mind that there must be something interesting to do with retired lino blocks....

This is lovely - I've always wanted to paint on gold leaf - many beautiful asian screens are created that way! Hope to see more of you this year!

"what can you expect - that Dermott's a right slacker!"
Then he went back to his early afternoon snooze in his afternoo sleeping spot

I think this is a real stunner. You are obviously an emerging mixed media artist of some future repute who isn't using her blog enough! ;) :D

Wow--that's beautiful, Robyn! I really love that. Lucky friends. As for washing up wherever you do, good for you, and I can't wait to see what shores you land on! Happy New Year!

What an interesting and lovely painting. I'm sure the recipients will adore it.

Looking forward to sharing whatever 2011 brings you.

Wow, this is super, Robyn! I think you're right not to make plans and allow for spontaneity - you always surprise and delight!

This is wonderful, Robyn! It's such a good idea too. I like the way you are always experimenting. A couple of years ago, I experimented with a little abstract painting using plain old aluminum foil, gesso, and acrylic paints. I keep looking at it and thinking I should try that again.

It's the quality of your posts that counts. :) I've been pitiful at posting this year too, so I have no room to talk. I'm looking forward to viewing your trip this year.

Wow, apples have never before had such impact!! They are so beautifully realized, Robyn. I so agree with you about seeing what happens in 2011---I just wish I had not missed wishing you happy birthday on your own January birthday!! I hope you had a lovely celebration, dear Robyn.

This did turn out great. It is so freeing to use the anything goes in the media selection. You have really made a master piece.

and you gave it away....so you

by the way Dermott has the same sense of humor you do.

Dermott said...

No, Pat, she has the same sense of humour I have. It's called being derivative.

Gosh, that metallic foil really adds a depth and texture that would be difficult to get from anything else! It plays off the apples really well too! Wow!
