Taking a Frangipani for a Spin

Frangipani 8" x 8" soft pastels

As Georgia O'Keeffe Month continues I was tossing up between pastels and oils. This is a photograph of a flower on the tree that bows over our garden in Sydney. I miss its perfume.

I thought the structure would appeal to Ms O'Keeffe.

I'm really enjoying this project but not the pastels, I'm afraid. So that leaves watercolour or oils for the next one.

Very O'Keefe-esque. Since that flower is named after an Italian nobleman, it's very appropriate!

Dave - Well done. I didn't know that! Now I'm trying to work out if he was the guy who used it to perfume gloves or the guy who broke bread for the poor. My life is just one big learning curve! ;)

I love it. Looks like you're done for the month.
Seriously, take the day off and have a Grappa after 5.
My friend will be in Montese this summer (big deal art patron thingie). Can't remember why I know Montese, but I think it's close to you.

Another beautiful excercise! I adore frangipani's and like you, coming from the southern hemipshere where they are just so abundant in beauty and fragrance, I feel the nostalgia sitting in my throat...miss it so much.
you've captured those ovelapping petals so beautifully and thanks to Dave, I'm also informed now!
You rightly deserve that Chianti now.

Casey - I'm very fond of grappa. Thank you. I wish you were closer so I could seek practical advice on blending pastels. Montese is way north of us, near Bologna.

Shirley - Thank you so much. Are you going to join in? Katherine is posting great links for Georgia O'Keeffe.

Ronell - Thank you :) It's a wonderful perfume, isn't it, you can almost feel it hanging in the air. I'm being offered grappa, Chianti and now prosecco from Marta. I'll really have to watch myself!

Marta - Thank you. Could you pick up a bottle of peach juice on the way and we'll have Bellinis.

It's a shame you didn't enjoy the pastels as you did such a lovely job with them. I do love this flower - and the way you've cropped it is just beautiful.

Judi - Thank you so much. I know I can't expect to master pastels overnight.

I like it, but I miss your personality. There's nothing like Robyn in full Robynhood.

Dear Laura - you've thrown me into a spin. Where did I express my personality? Did I finally find a style and then lose it again like the grasshopper I am leaping from medium to medium; style to style. LOL

Robyn - maybe you should involve the dogs with the drawings? ;)

Love the Frangipani and I'm stunned by this - you've taken to Georgia O'Keeffe like a duck to water!

Try changing the surface you;re using for pastels. I hated them when Io used them on paper. I got an abrasive surface and was off and running!

Thanks to Dave for this history lesson - I didn't know that.

Robyn, Again you've done Georgia proud! You did a great job on the center that swirls you in. Nice work on this one.

WOW! This is gorgeous.

Katherine - I'm really tickled that you like this! Thank you. I am already using an abrasive surface but I'm still having trouble pushing the colour around. I'm really inexperienced with pastels - this is only my second effort.

Joan - Thank you, as usual :)

Andrea - Thank you - that's a lovely comment.

Robyn, both of your O'Keeffe works this month are stunning. I'll even go so far as saying that they appeal to me a little more than O'Keeffe's herself. Her goal was to go "flat" and she achieved that in a beautiful, ground breaking way. Your work has the same simple intensity and beauty focus but doesn't have to go "flat" to maintain that focus. A very unique achievement.

Katherine - Thank you very much. I'm now thinking about some Notan exercises.

Rose - I'm speechless! You are so generous. My normal response would be - what a lovely thing to say but totally not true. Since I've just started reading The Artist's Way I'm going to treasure your comment and work towards making it come true. ;)

Robyn this is gorgeous as is the orange flower in the previous post. I don't do pastel. I think they are beautiful but just don't like that particular medium for myself.

Jeanne - I know exactly how you feel! Thank you or your lovely comment. I'm only using the pastels because I'm trying to justify buying them. Other people can make magic with them - me, nope.
