Linocut Print - Torre del Cassero

I'm obsessed with the tower above our garden wall. Perugians built the original structure in 1330. It houses an 18th century weight clock that strikes the time each hour (before and after the event) but never on the hour. Il Cassero gives its name to our neighbourhood in this little historic town. Under its blue and white flag we fight off various challenges throughout the year, culminating in the annual Palio dei Rioni (horse race).

This is my first linocut. I printed it first on 90lb watercolour paper, then not liking the naive cloud, I eliminated that and printed on Chinese rice paper. Belinda del Pesco, I'm not! But she does inspire me and I'm sure many others.

I have worked out how to do this without making too much mess.

I tried rubbing the paper against the inked lino block with a spoon, but the best baren turns out to be an Italian scaloppina hammer I bought for HWEM. I haven't told him yet!

HWEM here. M-hm. So you won't mind black stuff smeared all over your next flattened chicken breast?

I hope you aren't being personal!

I see an Italian hammer can have multi-purposes. The print is very nice. It does look better without the cloud. You're trying so many different techniques. Good for you! Ciao!

I love your artwork! Only just come on here from your HWEM's link in Expats. If you are in Florence again and want to paint in the garden I live in tell HWEM and I will give him my e-mail address. Don't worry it's better than a small back yard, but I don't want to post where it is here! There are a few pics on my blog.

HWEM here. No, artista, I'm not being personal. I've never seen a 44D chicken.

That's a very effective medium to capture the starkness of the tower silhouetted against the sky.

Great print Robyn! I also like the second one and what a lovely story about your tower. You are so versatile in doing so many different things...I will have to follow your lead...but you go so fast!!

wow! Funny how I just put a picture on my new ATC blog of a print I carved years ago...a self portrait. Your's is beautiful and I agree about the cloud. I don't remember what I used to burnish the image on the paper...maybe I sat on it? I might have to try the linocut again sometime. Great story too! I can't wait to meet you!

Dave - Thank you. I'm going to try another linocut of this tower - maybe another angle.

Alyson - Thank you for your delightful invitation. We'll be in touch. That's an awesome photograph of the lizards on your blog. They are way too fast for me.

Joan - Thank you - I'd probably do better if I focused.

Ronell - I really do need to focus - it's hard though, when so much inspires.

Marta - I'm very impressed with your linocut - three colours! Tempted by the idea of the Travel ATCs too - but I must focus!

Focus? what's that? LOL

Just stumbled upon your website through expats link (I'm Diane over there, living in southern Lazio). You are inspiring! I'd love to spend my time in Italy being creative! Seems I'm always sweeping the floor, ironing and making tomato sauce!! Did you study with anyone here in Italy, or did you bring your considerable skills with you? I'll be checking back often. Diane - Piacere. Thank you, I don't consider my skills considerable - but I'm working on it every day. By the way my floors don't invite close inspection, ironing is piling up and HWEM makes the tomato sauce. It's easy!

This is wonderful Robyn. I've been very remiss of late in visiting blogs and I can see you've been up to all sorts of things!

Katherine - Lovely to have you drop in! You haven't been remiss at all. As a daily visitor to your blog I don't know how you find time to visit anyone else's. Just keep Making a Mark.
